Choosing a name
- Names describe, then wear down. Real places were named for what was there, a ford by the oaks, and then worn smooth by centuries of speech into Oxford. A name that has worn down a little sounds older.
- Let the map share a language. Places in one country should sound related. Reuse an ending or two across a region, and change the sounds at the border.
- Some places get nicknames. The people who live somewhere rarely use its formal name. A city with an official name and a local one feels lived in.
How these names are made
Both come from lists we wrote and read through in full: invented one-word realms, and wild lands that pair a describing word with a kind of land, chosen so the two halves never say the same thing twice.
Nothing you generate is sent anywhere or saved: the names are picked in your browser.
In Author Sweets
Every character and place in an Author Sweets book has its own page in Planning, with the facts you keep about them and, under Also known as, the nicknames and titles the text uses, so Appears in finds every scene they are in whichever name is on the page.
Stuck on the scene rather than the name? Try one of the writing prompts, or browse the other name generators.
