Moving from Reedsy Studio
A Reedsy Studio book comes across as an EPUB, chapter by chapter. Here is what moves, how to move it, and what you give up.
What comes across
- Chapters
- Each chapter file in the EPUB becomes a chapter, and its headings are kept.
- Opening pages
- The cover, title and copyright pages are set aside in “Opening pages”, left out of exports.
- Text formatting
- Bold, italic and the text of each chapter come across. Reedsy’s themes and fonts do not.
What stays in Reedsy Studio
- Boards, notes and pinned notes
- Goals and version history
- Comments, track changes and reader previews
Moving, step by step
- In Reedsy Studio, export the book as an EPUB. Keep your Reedsy account until you are happy with the result.
- Sign up free. Import is part of Scribe and above, so choose that plan when you are ready to bring the book in.
- In the Library, choose Import a book and pick the .epub. It can be up to 100 MB. Only unprotected EPUBs can be read, such as the one Reedsy Studio exports for you.
- Check the preview. It lists the chapters and the opening pages set aside. Untick what you do not want, then import. Nothing is saved before you confirm, and the file is read in your browser.
- Rebuild your boards beside the draft: the Outline and the Plot grid for the story, and characters, places and notes for the rest. All of them are on the free plan.
- When you want feedback, share a read-only link. Readers need no account.
What is different
What Reedsy Studio does better
- Free EPUB and print-ready PDF typesetting, with unlimited books, on its free plan.
- Real-time collaboration with an editor, with track changes and comments.
- Beta-reader links that can expire and can be limited to some chapters.
- A large library of free courses, webinars and guides, and a marketplace of editors and designers if you want to hire one.
How Author Sweets differs
- The outline, characters, places and notes are on the free plan, inside the book.
- Books you have opened keep working offline and catch up when the connection returns.
- Readers see a read-only link. You see their margin comments, their answers to three questions you set, and how far each one got.
- A style check runs on your device: reading grade, passive voice, adverbs, filler words, clichés and long sentences.
- The free plan covers one book, and the Word, EPUB and PDF exports are part of Artisan and above. Markdown and plain text are on every plan.
- There is no live co-writing yet, and no marketplace: it is only the studio.

Why writers move, as of November 2026
The complaints that come up most often about Reedsy Studio, read from its own pages, reviews and forums on November 3, 2026. Many writers are happy with it, and a complaint here may be fixed by the time you read this.
- In 2025 some planning tools, such as unlimited boards and pinned notes, moved to a paid add-on, now called Outlining. Some writers were unhappy about the change. (Reedsy Studio’s pricing page and a writer’s post from April 2025)
- Version history on the free plan goes back 30 days. (Reedsy Studio’s pricing page)
- It runs only in the browser, and reviews note that it does not work offline. (Reedsy’s own comparison page and a June 2026 review)
- Three export themes that cannot be customised, and a limited choice of fonts. (Reedsy’s own comparison page)
When you are ready
Start with the free plan and write in it for as long as you like. Import is part of Scribe, from $7 a month, and you can move to it when you bring the book across. Not sure yet? Try the editor without an account first.
